Savanna wanted to go ice skating Friday night. Even at 7pm, I was still glued to my laptop, lost in all the things I didn't get done and frogs I didn't swallow during the week. I wasn't feeling at all satisfied with what I did accomplish this week, or very enthused to lace up those stiff rental ice skates and hit the rink.
"Mom, are you not happy?" she asked me, as I peeled myself away from the screen and committed to her we'd soon be headed out. ...I just couldn't get my mind off of work...
"I really want you to be happy." In my brain, with hopes for attitude adjustment, I repeated one of my favorite lines from early 80's TV:
Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice, pull down your pants and slide on the ice.
- Dr. Sidney Freedman, Korea-1951 (M*A*S*H) And so we went, and hit the rink.
I decided to leave all the stress in the locker, including my phone. We had 90 minutes -- ironically, exactly 90 minutes. Author Stephen Shapiro wrote recently about taking a 90 minute challenge. At that moment, I accepted the 90 minute challenge. My mental energies were glued on the pink-parka'd girl skating around in counter-clockwise circles next to me. It wasn't long before the music videos and crisp air took over.
"Now, there's that smile!" she noted, sounding triumphant and mature beyond her years.
